Get Wheelchairs – Electric Wheelchairs, Power Wheelchairs and Lifts

Wheelchairs offer mobility to the disabled and the elderly. To meet the needs of a diverse population, there are many different choices for those that need the assistance of a wheelchair, including manual wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs. Manual wheelchairs have to be pushed manually either by the occupant or another person from behind. Electric or power wheelchairs can be operated by the occupant and offering greater convenience and independence.

How an Electric Wheelchair Works

An electric wheelchair is powered by an electric motor. It has a rechargeable battery of 4 to 5 amps. There are indoor batteries, outdoor batteries, and indoor/outdoor batteries. The direction and speed of the wheelchair is controlled with a joystick. In the event that the occupant is unable to use his or her hand, there are special models that are operated by the chin or even a suck or puff scanner. Powered wheelchairs can move forward, backward, left or right. They can also recline or tilt. There are three types of electric wheelchairs: front wheel drive, center wheel drive, and mid-wheel drive. Other types of electric wheelchairs include the omni-directional wheelchair, human machine interface wheelchair, sensor control wheelchair, and environment control wheelchair.

Additional Costs/Benefits of Electric or Power Wheelchairs

In comparison to manual wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs provide a higher level of comfort and freedom. The price of a manual wheelchair ranges from less than $100 for a basic model to more than $1,000 for a specialized wheelchair. The price of an electric wheelchair ranges from around $1,500 to $7,500 or more depending on the brand and needs of the individual. It can be seen that power wheelchairs cost a lot more in comparison to electric models. There is also an added cost for any accessories and electricity needed to charge the batteries. Despite the extra costs, electric wheelchairs are more desirable because they offer greater mobility and convenience. Plus, power wheelchairs can be used with power wheelchair lifts, which greatly increases the mobility factor.

Tips for Buying Power Electric Wheelchairs

Different people have different needs, so it’s important to consider the needs when buying an electric wheelchair. Do you need an indoor or outdoor wheelchair? There’s also a wheelchair that can be used indoor and outdoor. For outdoor use, consider the routes you would be taking, because you would need a more powerful wheelchair to negotiate curbs and hills. Measure the width of the doors and various places in your home to ensure that the wheelchair can fit into those places. Make a shortlist of all the models that fit your requirements to compare the prices and features. Test the various models to find the best wheelchair in terms of comfort, functions, and performance. Always pay attention to the warranty offered for the model and it’s best to work with a reputable manufacturer.
